What Home Affairs publishes
Processing times come out as percentiles rather than an average, which is more honest and more confusing. As of the data updated 4 August 2026, half of 417 Working Holiday applications are decided in under a day, 75% within 14 days and 90% within 25 days. The 462 Work and Holiday visa runs slower across the board: 50% in 9 days, 75% in 19 days, 90% in 36 days.
Plan around the 90% line, not the 50% line. Half of 417 applications being decided inside a day is real, and it is also the reason people start refreshing ImmiAccount on day three.
Why your 417 visa is taking so long
Home Affairs says so itself: the guide gives an indication based on recently decided applications, and it does not guarantee that any application will be decided inside the timeframe. Anything that pulls your file out of the fast lane — a health examination, a police certificate, a request for more documents — puts you past the 90% line, and there is no published number for how far past.

Can I apply for a working holiday visa in Australia?
Not your first one. You cannot apply for a working holiday visa in Australia: the rule is geographic and it is strict. You must be outside Australia when you lodge, and outside Australia when it is granted. Flying in on a tourist visa and applying from a hostel in Sydney is not a shortcut — it fails on the location rule before anyone looks at the rest of it. TRN, Visa Grant Number, and the BCC thing
Before a visa exists, the number that identifies your application is the Transaction Reference Number. ImmiAccount issues it the moment you lodge, it sits at the top of your application in the portal, and it is what you quote in an enquiry.
After the grant, the number that matters is the Visa Grant Number on your grant letter. That is one of the identifiers VEVO takes when you or an employer check your visa and its conditions, which is a thing regional employers do ask for.
Then there is the BCC number, format BCC20XX/XXXXXX. People go hunting for it because a form or a forum post mentioned it. It is the department's internal case file reference — theirs, not yours. Home Affairs publishes nothing about it, which is exactly why you cannot find it explained anywhere official, and you do not need it for anything. If something asks you for a file number, it means your TRN or your Visa Grant Number.

Can I apply for my first working holiday visa while in Australia?
No. For a first working holiday visa you must be outside Australia when you lodge the application and outside Australia when it is granted. Arriving on a tourist visa and applying from inside the country does not work. (checked 15 August 2026)
What is a TRN and where do I find it?

Where do I find the BCC file number on a 417 visa?
You don't. The BCC number (format BCC20XX/XXXXXX) is the Department of Home Affairs' internal case file reference — theirs, not yours, and you need it for nothing. What you actually use are the TRN from your ImmiAccount and, once granted, the Visa Grant Number. (checked 15 August 2026)
