Can you study on a working holiday visa? And every other restriction

A working holiday visa is an open work right with four restrictions bolted onto it: a cap on how much you can study, a cap on how long you stay with one employer, a twelve-month clock that starts when you land, and a ban on bringing children. Everything else is yours.

Can you study on a working holiday visa?

Yes. You can study in Australia on a working holiday visa for up to four months. Condition 8548 sets that cap on study or training, which is where the 17-week figure comes from. It applies to the 417 and the 462 alike, full time or part time, and it applies to each visa separately: a second or third visa comes with a fresh four months rather than the remainder of the first.

Two things sit outside the count. Correspondence and online courses run by an overseas provider — the kind you could have done from home — have no limit at all. And workplace-based training is treated as employment rather than study, so the induction and the coffee training your venue puts you through is not eating your four months.

If study is the actual reason you are coming, Home Affairs says to get a Student visa. A semester of language school is fine. A year of it is the wrong visa.

Work: any job, six months per employer

Working holiday makers can work in any occupation or industry while in Australia — no approved-jobs list, no minimum hours, no requirement to work at all. The restriction is condition 8547, which caps you at six months with one employer, and the 6 month rule guide has the exemptions and the written-permission route in full.

Twelve months, counted from first entry

The visa runs twelve months from the day you first enter Australia on it, not from the grant date. Inside that window you can leave and come back as often as you want. Nothing pauses the clock, though. A month in New Zealand in the middle of the year is a month off your twelve, not a month added to the end, and no working holiday visa is ever extended.

Age: where the two subclasses split

The 417 Working Holiday visa is 18 to 30 inclusive, or up to 35 inclusive on ten passports; the 462 Work and Holiday visa is 18 to 30 for every participating country with no exceptions. Since 1 July 2026 an application lodged over the limit is invalid at lodgement — no fee taken, no review — so the birthday is a hard deadline rather than a risk. No dependent children

Dependent children cannot come with you at any point during your stay, and that includes a child already in Australia. There is no dependant add-on and no exemption to apply for. If you are travelling with children this is the wrong visa, and it is worth knowing that before you pay the charge.
